A buying strategy for the supplement marketplace.

Shopping for vitamins and supplements can indeed be overwhelming due to the vast array of options available. To ensure you're getting quality products that meet your specific needs, consider the following ten factors when making your selection:

1. **Purpose and Needs**: Identify your specific health goals and nutritional needs. Not everyone requires the same supplements, so consult with a healthcare professional to determine what's right for you. A blood test, or allergy testing can help determine how to best optimize what you choose to supplement.

2. **Quality and Brand Reputation**: Choose reputable brands with a track record of producing high-quality supplements. Look for third-party testing and certifications like NSF, USP, or ConsumerLab to verify product quality. Some brands are known for their price and availability accross the supermarkets, and it's worth shopping for quality that meets your price point. You get what you pay for.

3. **Ingredients and Form**: Check the ingredient list to ensure it contains the vitamins and minerals you need. Opt for supplements that use bioavailable forms of nutrients for better absorption.

4. **Dosage and Potency**: Pay attention to the dosage of each nutrient in the supplement. Make sure it provides an appropriate and safe level of the vitamins and minerals you require. One of the ways companies make supplements "cheaper" is to cut corners, like using less dose concentration or using low quality sources. Buyer beware!

5. **Purity and Additives**: Avoid supplements with unnecessary fillers, artificial colors, or preservatives. The fewer additives, the better.

6. **Bioavailability**: Some supplements are formulated for better absorption. Look for factors like chelated minerals or liposomal delivery systems that enhance bioavailability.

7. **Expiration Date**: Always check the expiration date to ensure the supplement is still potent. Expired supplements may not provide the intended benefits.

8. **Packaging**: Choose supplements that come in opaque, airtight containers to protect them from light and moisture, which can degrade the product. Consider the delivery and storage system of a warehouse like Amazon. Some suppliers store their inventory in an Amazon warehouse which may or may-not be climate controlled. When the order is placed, the supplier packages the product and it sits in a truck or van for many hours until it arrives at your door...probably not climate controlled until the package is opened and stored. All this to say, that quality and potency can degrade with prolonged exposure to heat and uncontrolled climates. Beware of Summer season deliveries as this can really accelerate the degradation process.

9. **Reviews and Recommendations**: Read customer reviews and seek recommendations from trusted sources, such as healthcare professionals, friends, or family members who have experience with the product.

10. **Price Comparison**: While price isn't the sole indicator of quality, it's essential to compare prices of similar products from different brands. Be cautious of products that are significantly cheaper than others, as this could indicate lower quality.

Additionally, keep in mind that a balanced diet should be your primary source of nutrients. Supplements should complement, not replace, a healthy eating plan. It's also crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen, as they can provide personalized recommendations based on your health status and goals. They can also help you avoid potential interactions with medications or existing health conditions.
